R.F. Edrass is the pseudonym for a college-student who writes literary fiction and Sci-Fi. I’ve always loved the idea of a post-apocalypse, however I think the genre can be used for more than pulpy action. My writing uses the collapse of civilization as a way to explore questions about humanity, societal arrangements, and culture in a literary style. Over the last 4 years, I have developed a unique version of the American Post-Apocalypse with over 37 years of lore. This website is my attempt at sharing it in a Wiki-style format.

Excerpts of a few of my works are published on various digital platforms. You can find the full versions, and some exclusive content, here. Please note that this website and its content are maintained by one person, so please excuse any funky links and grammatical errors.

What My WRiting’s About

Humanity

All of my writing is centered around people, their communities, the choices they make, and how they reconcile with the past.

America

The country’s cultural and geographic heterogeneity provides an inexhaustible well of scenarios to center my stories around.

Intellectualism

As a lifelong nerd, I love writing with wit and intelligence. My style is encyclopedic and intentionally confusing.

The End of the world

I use the collapse of civilization, and its aftermath, to ask essential questions about humanity. I want to explore our values and our breaking points.

Obscure Narratives

I employ various literary techniques and points of view to craft perspectives that are both absurd and uniquely suited for the stories they tell.

Provocation

I don’t write to make readers comfortable. I believe in creating tension through twisted characters and visceral interactions.

Lore Primer

America, 2067. Nearly 40 years after the collapse of civilization in a process known as “The Burnout”, the survivors, their descendants, and the empires that they have built fight for survival, self-determination and spiritual meaning in an increasingly strange world.

In order to cope with the sheer despair of the Burnout, many surviving communities found refuge in the absurd and occult. These various new faiths have since been used to consolidate power in fanatical nation-states. The average person, born in the shadows of ruins, knows little besides the lore and ways of the Clan or City they were born into, and they often spend their lives completely swept up in their nation’s struggles for territory, trading-rights, holy relics, and resources.

Only a few administrators and intellectuals operate in positions where they can see the true nature of the country: it is yet another grand political experiment devised by early leaders who would sooner lock their country in stagnation and ignorance than risk progress and another Burnout. The very laws and rituals that these civilizations are founded upon are corporate-approved machinations.

This re-wilded frontier is still very much the land of opportunity: there is profound spiritual meaning for all who are willing to believe, glory for those who can be ruthless, and for a few who are daring enough to venture to the fringes of society— and their sanity— glimpses of truth about the Burnout and the real powers at play.

These fateful decades in the twilight of civilization have been a time like no other. Industrial superpowers have risen out of ash and fallen into bloody snow while rumors and interventions of the supernatural have become an increasing part of daily life.

To truly grasp the breadth and depth of the Post-Burnout country is to force one’s mind into distension. To understand it in its glorious and tragic entirety is to admit insanity.

This is a very high-concept setting. A lot of the “cool” things are in the nuances between cultures and economies for different factions, the multi-lateral deals they make, and the evolution of different political theories as civilization gets further from the collapse. There is a great deal of low-concept “cool” stuff, like cults, supervehicles, and cosmic horror.
